Chelsea Rosenthal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University. She holds a J.D. and Ph.D. from New York University, alongside degrees from Bryn Mawr College and the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law, particularly privacy, legal ethics, and moral uncertainty. Prior to SFU, she was an Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow in NYU’s Center for Bioethics.
Education: B.A. Philosophy & Political Science (Bryn Mawr College), M.A. Philosophy (University of Virginia), J.D. (NYU), Ph.D. Philosophy (NYU).
Research Interests: Privacy’s impact on meaningful living, moral responsibility in legal contexts, decision-making under uncertainty, and conceptual frameworks for identity. Her work explores how technology (e.g., algorithms, social media) shapes ethical dilemmas and navigates tensions between autonomy and societal norms.
Publications: Her recent work examines privacy fragmentation in digital spaces, the role of self-explanation in algorithmic decisions, and moral risks in legal practice. She critiques traditional legal ethics for overburdening lawyers with moral certainty and advocates for procedural safeguards in uncertain contexts.
Teaching: Courses include Moral and Legal Problems and Social & Political Philosophy. Her pedagogy integrates contemporary issues like algorithmic bias and ethical technology use.
