Chelsea Rathburn is an Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing at Mercer University, serving as Georgia's Poet Laureate and Chair of the Ferrol A. Sams Jr. Distinguished Writer-in-Residence Committee. She holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas and a B.A. in English from Florida State University.
Her research focuses on creative writing pedagogy, narrative strategies, autobiography, travel literature, and modern/contemporary poetry. She teaches creative writing workshops, modern poetry analysis, fiction studies, and Integrative Studies courses.
Rathburn’s publications include three award-winning poetry collections: Still Life with Mother and Knife (2019), A Raft of Grief (2013), and The Shifting Line (2005). Her work has been featured in prestigious journals like Poetry and The Atlantic, and she writes personal essays for Creative Nonfiction and The Rumpus.
Her accolades include the 2020 Eric Hoffer Book Award, the 2012 Autumn House Prize, and the 2005 Richard Wilbur Award. Her recent work explores themes of maternal relationships, Southern identity, and formal innovation in poetry.
