Sharona Muir is a Professor in the English Department at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Modern Thought & Literature from Stanford University (1991), an M.A. in English & Creative Writing from Boston University (1980), and an A.B. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University (1978, magna cum laude).
Her research interests span creative nonfiction, modern American literature, history of science, posthumanism, animal studies, and fabulism. She has published award-winning works such as Invisible Beasts (2014) and The Book of Telling (2005), blending personal narrative with interdisciplinary exploration. Muir’s poetry and nonfiction have appeared in The New York Times, Kenyon Review, and The Paris Review.
Her publications reflect engagement with environmental ethics, family history, and the intersections of science and storytelling. Awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Hodder Fellowship, and multiple Ohio Arts Council Fellowships.
Muir teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in poetry workshops, contemporary poetry seminars, and creative writing. She is actively involved in the English Department’s mission to foster literary innovation and critical thinking.
