Chase Castle is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music History at the University of Delaware's School of Music, housed within the College of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on 19th-century American evangelical hymns and the intersection of racial politics within sacred music. He holds a BM in Music History & Literature and Keyboard Performance from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music and a PhD in Music from the University of Pennsylvania.
His current book project, The Gospel in Black and White: Race and Popular Culture in Nineteenth-Century American Hymns, challenges traditional scholarly divides between Black and white musical histories by examining African American and secular influences in gospel hymnody. His work has been supported by grants from Harvard University, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the Music Library Association.
Castle is an active performer, serving as an organist and choral conductor at St. Mary’s Church in Philadelphia. His research has been published in journals such as the Journal of the Society for American Music and the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography.
