Chase Bringardner

Chase Bringardner is a Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Auburn University's College of Liberal Arts and serves as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs effective January 1, 2024. He joined Auburn in 2009 as an assistant professor, was promoted to full professor in 2020, and previously chaired the Department of Theatre and Dance from 2019 until his provost appointment.

Bringardner holds the following degrees:

• Bachelor's degrees in History and Theatre from Davidson College
• Master's degree in Theatre History and Criticism from the University of Texas at Austin
• PhD in Theatre History and Criticism from the University of Texas at Austin (dissertation: "Popular Entertainments and Constructions of Southern Identity: How Burlesques, Medicine Shows, and Musical Theatre Made Meaning and Money in the South, 1854-1980")

His research centers on popular entertainments including burlesques, medicine shows, and musical theatre as vehicles for constructing regional (particularly Southern) identities. He critically examines intersections of race, gender, and class in performance forms, with publications covering region/politics in musical theatre and domestic space performance in medicine shows. His current book project investigates the socio-cultural history of Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre and its role in regional/national performance narratives.

Bringardner is an active leader in the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), serving as president and vice president of membership/marketing, and in the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR) where he planned the 2018 conference. He has directed major productions including Assassins, 9 to 5, Cabaret, Hair, and Jesus Christ Superstar, and maintains an active scholarly profile through journal publications and conference presentations.
