Dr. Charlotte Nicklas is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Science and the Centre for Design History. Her research focuses on 19th-20th century dress, textiles, and material culture. She holds a PhD from the University of Brighton (supervised by Prof. Lou Taylor), MA from Bard Graduate Center, and BA from Harvard University.
Her work explores the intersection of fashion and cultural history, with particular emphasis on textile dye evolution and fictional representations of dress. Recent research includes museum textile preservation strategies and pandemic-era academic gender inequalities. She actively supervises PhD candidates in design history topics.
Key collaborations include exhibitions at the Bard Graduate Center and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, alongside projects with Worthing Museum. Her publications span dye chemistry history, clothing semiotics, and museum studies.
