Dr. Anne Bissonnette is a Professor in the Department of Human Ecology and Director of Student Experience and Learning in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta. She holds a PhD and specializes in material culture studies, dress history, and museum curatorship. Her research focuses on clothing and textiles from the late 18th century to the present, particularly exploring the intersection of fashion with political, cultural, and social histories. Notably, she led the SSHRC-funded project examining the impact of the French Revolution on European and American fashion (2017–2023).
Her academic roles include teaching courses like HECOL 268: Survey of Historic Dress in the Western World and supervising over 20 graduate and undergraduate students. Her exhibitions, such as 'Woven Identities: Ghanaian and Guatemalan Textiles in the Face of Globalization,' have garnered awards like the Richard Martin Award. She is a Costume Society of America Fellow and has received accolades for teaching and curatorial work.
Bissonnette’s publications span museum practices, historical dress analysis, and innovative PPE design. Her recent work addresses mannequin diversity in museums to promote social equity. She actively engages in public outreach through lectures, media appearances, and exhibitions, emphasizing accessibility and cultural relevance in fashion history.
