Charlotte Knowles is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen. She specializes in feminist philosophy, phenomenology, and social and political philosophy, with a focus on complicity in gendered contexts. Her research explores freedom, responsibility, and agency, particularly through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir and Martin Heidegger.
Education: Charlotte holds a PhD from Birkbeck College, University of London. Prior to her current position, she worked at Birkbeck and Oxford Brookes University in the UK.
Research Interests: Charlotte’s work centers on feminist philosophy and phenomenology, particularly examining complicity in gendered contexts. She investigates how individuals can be complicit in their own subordination and explores concepts of freedom, responsibility, and agency. Her research bridges Heideggerian phenomenology with feminist theory, addressing issues like gendered violence and adaptive preferences.
Awards: She received the Robert Papzian essay prize in 2020 and the Early Career Award from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 2023. Since 2024, she has been co-editor-in-chief of Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy.
Advising and Grants: Charlotte is the primary supervisor for a project on complicity as motivated ignorance and an interdisciplinary PhD on feminist notions of empowerment. She is also a SCOOP fellow at the University of Groningen.
Labs/Teams: She is affiliated with the Centre for Gender Studies and actively contributes to the Society for Women in Philosophy UK.
