Dr. Goldthorpe's research centers on storytelling and the transmission of memories through making, with her innovative 'narrative-led making' methodology at its core. Her current groundbreaking work captures stories from ageing rubber fetishists to understand how their kink has positively impacted wellbeing throughout their lives. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges fashion design, textile studies, memory studies, and creative health, exploring how crafted artifacts can embody personal narratives and emotional experiences, particularly focusing on marginalized communities and alternative lifestyles.
Analysis of Dr. Goldthorpe's publication history reveals a consistent trajectory exploring the relationship between material objects and personal narratives. Her recent work (2023-2025) increasingly focuses on wellbeing through craft, with particular emphasis on community engagement, co-production methodologies, and understanding how creative practices preserve cultural knowledge and support mental health. Her research demonstrates how material culture can give voice to underrepresented groups through innovative design approaches.
Professional Activities:
- Regular presenter at international conferences including IFFTI and Textile Institute World Conference
- Active participant in research projects related to digital fashion innovation
- Collaborator with museums on community engagement projects
