Debbie Allsop is a Lecturer in Fashion at the University of Huddersfield, affiliated with the Department of Design and Architecture and the Centre for Cultural Ecologies in Art, Design and Architecture. She joined the university in 2012, specializing in teaching pattern cutting, garment construction, and textiles for fashion. Her research focuses on sewing skills, sustainable fashion practices, and bridging industry expertise with academic education. She holds a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design from Birmingham City Institute of Art and Design (2005) and a Master’s degree (2017) examining sewing skills in Higher Education.
Research interests include UN Sustainable Development Goals-related topics, particularly upcycling and garment construction. Key projects include organizing textile exhibitions, upcycling challenges, and costume design for events like the Huddersfield Town match day festival and the 92nd Textile Institute World Conference. Her work emphasizes community engagement, environmental sustainability, and revitalizing traditional textile skills.
Debbie has actively participated in academic activities such as organizing workshops (e.g., Kirklees Libraries Embroidered Heart Workshop), peer-reviewing for publishers like Bloomsbury, and presenting on topics like school uniform lifespan management. She has contributed to over six research outputs and eight professional activities since 2017, showcasing her commitment to both education and applied fashion research.
