Charlie Wilson is a Professor of Energy and Climate Change and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute (ECI). He also serves as a visiting research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. His research focuses on energy transitions, low-carbon innovation, and policy analysis, with a particular emphasis on integrating behavioral and technological dimensions. Wilson leads major projects like iDODDLE (digitalisation of daily life), NAVIGATE (behavioral realism in net-zero pathways), and PRISMA (low-carbon lifestyles in policy analysis). His work is supported by grants from the European Research Council (ERC), Horizon Europe, and the UK Research Councils.
He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia (Canada), where his dissertation addressed the social and behavioral determinants of energy use. Prior to Oxford, he spent 11 years at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia. Wilson is an active member of international networks such as GECKO (smart technologies), EDITS (energy demand innovations), and RCN-DEE (digital economy).
His research explores how digitalisation and policy frameworks can accelerate decarbonisation while centering human behavior. Key themes include energy democracy, sustainable daily practices, and the interplay between technology adoption and emission reduction strategies. Recent projects include analyzing electric vehicle workplace charging optimisation and the material impacts of energy transitions.
Charlie has led over 100 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to policy briefs for global institutions. His work bridges academic insights with practical solutions, emphasizing the need for equitable, people-centered climate action.
