Dr Charlie Scarff is a British Heart Foundation Jacqueline Murray Coomber Fellow and University Academic Fellow in Structural Biology at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM) within the School of Medicine. He is based at the LIGHT Laboratories and is an active member of the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology.
His research focuses on the structure and function of myosin motors and muscle in health and disease, particularly in inherited heart conditions like hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy. Utilizing an integrative structural biology approach, his lab combines cryo-electron microscopy/tomography (cryoEM/ET), mass spectrometry, mutational analyses, functional assays, and modeling to uncover molecular mechanisms.
Dr Scarff’s recent work has made significant strides in visualizing the swinging lever mechanism of myosin using time-resolved cryoEM and elucidating the mechanism of mavacamten inhibition, a promising therapeutic for cardiomyopathy. His publications in high-impact journals reflect a strong trend in advancing structural methodologies to understand myosin dynamics and disease modulation.
- British Heart Foundation Jacqueline Murray Coomber Fellow
He actively supervises PhD students and collaborates with leading researchers such as Prof. Muench and Prof. White. His lab is currently recruiting for several PhD projects focusing on cardiac myosin modulators, smooth muscle contraction, and in situ structural biology, indicating ongoing grant funding and research momentum. Dr Scarff is also involved in organizing scientific meetings, such as the Astbury Centre’s innovation event at the Royal Society, promoting translational drug discovery.
His work is conducted within the Astbury Centre and LICAMM, leveraging state-of-the-art facilities for structural and cardiovascular research.
