Charlie Keil serves as Principal of Innis College and holds dual professorships in the Department of History and Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. Previously Director of the Cinema Studies Institute, he has established himself as a leading scholar in film studies through extensive publications and editorial work spanning over two decades.
His research centers on early and silent cinema with particular focus on the pivotal transitional era of the 1910s, authorship frameworks, stardom construction, and institutional histories of film production. Keil's work bridges historical analysis with theoretical examinations of craft practices, examining how technological shifts and industrial structures shaped cinematic expression from silent films through contemporary Hollywood.
Recent publications reveal concentrated exploration of editing practices, directorial roles, and actor personas within early cinema's institutional context. His scholarship consistently investigates the interplay between technological innovation, industrial organization, and creative authorship across different historical periods of film development.
