Charlie Briggs is a Senior Lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Vermont (UVM), specializing in the history of later medieval Europe, world history, and early European history. Over 15 years at UVM, he taught 3,560 students across 73 courses, including notable classes like Pandemic, Society and Culture and Encountering the Other: Medieval and Renaissance.
Briggs is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (2011) and received the UVM President’s Distinguished Senior Lecturer award (2017). His research focuses on medieval cultural and intellectual history, with a particular emphasis on social structures and pandemic impacts in historical contexts. He has published two major books, including the revised The Body Broken: Medieval Europe 1300–1520 (2020) and co-edited A Companion to Giles of Rome (2016), alongside 13 chapters and 4 encyclopedia entries.
Briggs has presented 29 conference papers and served on 8 thesis committees. In 2024, he held a Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh. He will retire from UVM in May 2025 after a prolific career marked by teaching excellence and scholarly contributions to medieval studies.
