Dr. David Ditchburn is an Associate Professor in Medieval History at Trinity College Dublin, specializing in later medieval Scotland's international connections. He holds a position in the Department of History and serves as Principal Investigator on the Irish Chancery Rolls Project, while co-editing The Scottish Historical Review. His research examines commercial, religious, and political links between Scotland and Europe, including saintly cults, pilgrimage networks, and diplomatic relations. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on medieval religion, Scottish history, and European contexts.
His research interests include medieval Scotland’s role in Christendom, focusing on topics like the Western Schism’s impact, maritime trade, and pre-Union political dynamics. His publications span monographs like Scotland and Europe: The Medieval Kingdom and its Contacts with Christendom and edited volumes such as Atlas of Medieval Europe. Current projects involve a companion volume analyzing Scotland’s political connections across Europe.
Teaching focuses on 13th-16th century Europe, covering modules like Religion, Death and Culture and Renaissance Florence. He supervises postgraduate research on medieval Scottish history, religion, and economic history. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to medieval networks, emphasizing transnational and transregional perspectives.
