Charles Zerner is the Barbara B. and Bertram J. Cohn Professorship in Environmental Studies at Sarah Lawrence College. He holds a BA from Clark University, MArch from the University of Oregon, and JD from Northeastern University. His work bridges environmental studies with humanities, focusing on political ecology, environmental justice, and urban landscapes in the Anthropocene.

Research explores post-industrial landscapes, climate change interventions, and marginalized communities’ relationships with nature. Notable projects include studies of Istanbul’s Yedikule gardens, Kathmandu’s migrant kitchen gardens, and Palestinian-Israeli territorial landscapes. He has directed programs at Rainforest Alliance and contributed to seminal works like People, Plants, and Justice.
Recent publications analyze urban ecological resistance strategies and food policy advocacy. He holds grants from Fulbright-Hays, NEH, and SSRC, and has held residencies at UC Irvine and the Woodrow Wilson Center.
Directs the Intersections Colloquium Series on border zones in environmental studies, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between humanities and sciences.
