Charles Nolan is the Bonar MacFie Chair in Economics at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow. He holds a Professorial rank and specializes in Macroeconomics, with research interests in Monetary Policy, Fiscal Policy, Banking, and Macroprudential Issues. He previously worked at the Bank of England and held academic positions at the University of Reading, Durham, and St Andrews. He co-founded The Centre for Dynamic Macroeconomic Analysis with Jagjit Chadha.
His academic roles include Associate Editor of the European Economic Review and membership on the International Advisory Board of the Scottish Journal of Political Economy. Awards include Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2015) and presidency of the Scottish Economic Society (2020–2023). He has served on the Scottish Fiscal Commission (2016–2017).
His research explores macroeconomic policy, financial frictions, and optimal control frameworks. Recent work includes analysis of monetary policy adaptation and banking sector dynamics. Key grants include funding from the Leverhulme Trust (2001–2002) and Shell Foundation (2006–2007).
Teaching focuses on graduate courses in Public Finance and International Macroeconomics. Current supervision includes studies on housing markets and text-mining applications in macroeconomics. His work-in-progress addresses banking models, heterogeneous agent frameworks, and endogenous exchange costs.
