Charles Kupchan is a Professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University, holding dual appointments in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and the College’s Department of Government. He has served in senior U.S. government roles, including Special Assistant to President Barack Obama and Senior Director for European Affairs on the National Security Council (2014–2017), and as Director for European Affairs during the Clinton administration. His academic career includes prior roles as an Assistant Professor of Politics at Princeton University and visiting scholarships at institutions such as Harvard University and the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
- Education: B.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard University; M.Phil and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford.
- Research Focus: Global power transitions, international peacebuilding, and U.S. foreign policy. His work examines the dynamics of geopolitical shifts, including rising non-Western powers and the implications for international order.
- Awards & Fellowships: Henry A. Kissinger Scholar at the Library of Congress (2006–2007), Senior Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy (2013–2014), and Woodrow Wilson International Center Fellow.
His influential publications include No One’s World (2012), How Enemies Become Friends (2010), and The End of the American Era (2002). Kupchan is also a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and has advised on transatlantic security and global governance.
