Charles Egeland is a Professor and Director of the Archaeology Program in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). His research focuses on Pleistocene human-environment interactions, using zooarchaeological and taphonomic methods to study ancient animal remains. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Indiana University.
Research Interests: Human Evolution, Paleolithic Archaeology, Zooarchaeology, Vertebrate Taphonomy, Paleoenvironmental Studies, and Hunter-Gatherer Ecology. His work integrates field studies in Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) and Swartkrans (South Africa) with modern savanna bone analyses and computational modeling of post-glacial social networks in Europe.
Recent Work Trends: Recent publications emphasize experimental butchery studies, carnivore behavior analysis, forensic applications of bone modification studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to reconstructing hominin behavior. His projects address long-term human adaptation to environmental change, blending archaeological data with ecological modeling.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of NSF funding for collaborative research on Ice Age social networks. Research has been published in high-impact journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Scientific Reports.
Teaching & Mentoring: Regularly incorporates students in research and teaches courses including Human Osteology, Paleolithic Archaeology, and Primate Behavior. Focuses on preparing students for 21st-century interdisciplinary challenges.
Labs/Teams: Leads projects combining archaeology with computer science through NSF collaborations. Engages in fieldwork initiatives at UNESCO World Heritage Sites in East Africa.
