Charles Crowther is an Associate Professor in Ancient History at the University of Oxford and holds roles as Assistant Director of the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents and Fellow in Ancient History at The Queen's College. His academic affiliations include the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies. He has been a Research Fellow at Wolfson College (1997–2004) and has taught at King’s College London and the Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations in Changchun, China (1992–1994).

He leads museum and field projects in Chios (Greece) and the Commagene region of southeastern Turkey, emphasizing the intersection of textual evidence and archaeological contexts.
