Charles Brearley is a Professor of Biochemistry in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA), a position he has held since 2019. Previously, he served as Reader (2016–2019), Senior Lecturer (2009–2016), and Lecturer (2001–2008) at UEA. His career includes a BBSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (2000–2003) and postdoctoral work at the University of Cambridge and the Max-Planck-Institut für Molekulare Pflanzenphysiologie in Germany.
His research focuses on inositol phosphate biochemistry, enzymology, and structural biology, with applications in plant biology, animal nutrition, and human disease. Key projects include studying phytase enzymes for sustainable agriculture and understanding inositol phosphate signaling pathways. Collaborators include Prof. Tzyy-Jen Chiou (Academia Sinica) and Prof. Barry Potter (University of Oxford).
Recent research spans malting scenarios, animal feed optimization, and plant stress tolerance. He leads projects funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and industry partners like AB Vista. His work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to food security and sustainable resource use.
- Education: PhD in Plant Biochemistry (University of Wales, 1986)
- Key Expertise: Inositol phosphate analysis, enzyme kinetics, structural biology
- Consulting: AB Enzymes GmbH and AB Vista Ltd since 2013
His lab’s findings contribute to improving agricultural productivity and reducing environmental phosphorus waste through phytase-driven innovations.
