Charles Bolyard is a Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy & Religion, James Madison University (JMU), within the College of Arts and Letters. His academic focus spans Medieval, Ancient, and Early Modern philosophy, with particular emphasis on epistemological and metaphysical debates. Dr. Bolyard's research explores the evolution of skepticism from Augustine to high medieval scholasticism, including figures like Henry of Ghent, John Duns Scotus, and Peter Auriol.
- Education: B.A. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington.
His work also examines the interplay between Medieval Philosophy and Ancient Greek/Hellenistic traditions. Dr. Bolyard co-edited Later Medieval Metaphysics: Ontology, Language, and Logic (2013) with Rondo Keele. He received the Fulbright Core Scholar Award for study in Cyprus in 2013 and was recognized as the Carl Harter Distinguished Teacher (2011-2012) and a Madison Vision Teaching Award recipient (2017).
Selected publications include contributions to Radical Thinking in the Middle Ages (forthcoming), Epistemology: The Key Thinkers (2019), and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (2017). His research often intersects with topics in the Problem of Universals and Self and Identity.
