Charles Allen Brown serves as a Senior Lecturer at Purdue University within the PLaCE (Program in Liberal Arts and Cultural Engagement) office, teaching SCLA 110/111 courses and specialized training in academic writing for international researchers. His office is located in Young Hall 802, and he maintains active engagement with global academic communities through his research and teaching.
His educational foundation includes:
- BA in anthropology (archaeology specialization) from Ohio State University
- BS in English education from Ohio State University
- MA in TESOL from Penn State University
- PhD in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State University
Dr. Brown's research program critically examines hidden curricula in English language teaching materials through the lens of critical media studies, with geographic concentration on Japan and Taiwan. He investigates systemic biases related to ageism, heteronormativity, ethnicity, and native-speakerism, revealing how visual representations and textual content perpetuate social inequities. His work bridges language education with sustainability studies, internationalization frameworks, and digital literacy, exposing connections between search engine algorithms and pedagogical content. This scholarship informs teacher training initiatives across multiple continents.
Analysis of his 2022-2025 publications demonstrates consistent methodological rigor in corpus-based analysis of ELT materials, with growing emphasis on visual agism and heteronormative depictions. His frameworks for evaluating social representation have been applied across JET Programme materials, Japanese university curricula, and Taiwanese educational contexts, highlighting transnational patterns in hidden curriculum formation. Recent work increasingly addresses the intersection of digital media bias and language education.
Dr. Brown has held associate professor positions at Hokkaido University's Research Faculty of International Communication, Media, and Tourism Studies and Northern Marianas College's English Department. His international teacher training extends across Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, with documented focus on pre-service educator development. He actively mentors graduate researchers in critical discourse analysis of educational materials and has secured grants for cross-cultural studies of ELT representation.
His current research collective examines algorithmic bias in language education resources while developing interventions for inclusive material design. Ongoing projects include longitudinal studies of ageist imagery in Japanese textbooks and collaborative analyses of sustainability themes in East Asian language curricula, with fieldwork conducted in partnership with institutions in Sapporo and Taipei.
