Chao Ren is a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Hamilton College, specializing in modern South and Southeast Asian history, global history, environmental history, legal history, and the history of capitalism. His research examines environmental influences on global capitalism and colonial subjectivity in Burma's early oil industry. He teaches courses on 'Environment and Capitalism' and 'Law and Colonialism.'
