Atsuko Naono is a Teaching and Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Faculty of History and the Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. She is also associated with the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities. Her research focuses on the history of infectious diseases in Southeast Asia, particularly malaria and smallpox, with an emphasis on Myanmar's post-colonial medical policies and border regions affected by conflict.
Her teaching includes courses on Medicine, Empire and Development within Global & Imperial History frameworks. Current research explores malaria control programmes in Myanmar’s conflict zones and plans to expand this to other Southeast Asian regions facing disease and warfare challenges.
