Jeong-Ran Kim is a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Faculty of History, associated with the Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. Previously, they held a research fellowship at Kobe University, where they completed their doctorate in history. Their work focuses on disease and public health in pre-colonial and colonial Korea and the Japanese Empire. Current projects include a Wellcome Trust-funded study on malaria in Asia and an AHRC-funded investigation into military medicine during the Korean War.
Research interests span the history of medicine in the Japanese Empire, Cold War medical systems in Korea, and the intersection of public health with geopolitical conflicts. They contribute to interdisciplinary projects involving scientists and organizations like the WHO. Teaching focuses on modern Japanese history and medicine in warfare.
Featured grants include the Wellcome Trust Investigator’s Award and AHRC funding. Their research highlights neglected aspects of medical history in Asia, including malaria's colonial contexts and post-1945 health systems in divided Korea.
