Chantel Acevedo serves as Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Department of English at the University of Miami's College of Arts and Sciences. Born in Miami to Cuban parents, she has established herself as a significant voice in Cuban-American literature through both her creative work and academic leadership.
Her research and creative interests focus on Cuban-American literary traditions, historical fiction, children's literature with cultural representation, and the immigrant experience. Acevedo's work often explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, family dynamics, and the Cuban diaspora experience in America, particularly through the lens of Miami's Cuban community.
Her publications reveal a consistent trajectory exploring Cuban history and identity through multiple lenses - from historical novels examining pivotal moments like the Mariel Boatlift to children's literature that incorporates Cuban-American experiences into fantasy and adventure narratives. She has successfully bridged academic literary scholarship with popular fiction, particularly through her award-winning Muse Squad series which reimagines Greek mythology with Cuban-American protagonists.
