Chantal Zakari is a Professor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University, where she served as Chair of Graphic Arts, Photography, Print, and Paper from 1997 to 2020. Currently, she holds the position of Associate Dean of Curriculum at SMFA at Tufts.

Zakari’s interdisciplinary practice bridges photography, graphic design, installation, and social intervention to critique contemporary issues through personal narratives and historical connections. Her work often culminates in artist publications under Eighteen Publications, a collaborative imprint with Mike Mandel, emphasizing accessibility and affordability. Key methodologies include archival research, media manipulation, and community engagement, with a focus on democratizing art through print-on-demand and digital reproduction.
Notable works include Pictures from the Outside (2023) interrogating urban peripheries, Arsenal News (2021) critiquing media narratives, and The Turk and The Jew (1998) documenting Levantine heritage. Her practice spans fabric banners, ceramic plates, and resin sculptures, reflecting diverse material explorations.
Zakari’s work is held in major collections including Yale University and the Addison Gallery of American Art. Exhibitions include venues like the International Center of Photography (NY), ICA Boston, and Lothringer13 (Munich). She collaborates with Mike Mandel on projects blending art, media, and public engagement.
