Chantal Berna Renella is an Associate Professor at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Faculty of Biology and Medicine, and Head of the Center for Integrative and Complementary Medicine (CEMIC) at CHUV. Her work bridges clinical practice, research, and teaching, with a focus on developing integrative medicine within a university hospital setting.
Her research explores non-pharmacological modulation of pain through complementary therapies such as hypnosis, acupuncture, meditation, and mental imagery. She employs psychophysical methods and brain imaging to understand the mechanisms of pain modulation and improve therapeutic outcomes. A key aspect of her work is the clinical implementation of evidence-based complementary therapies in academic hospitals, particularly for chronic and refractory pain, functional disorders, and supportive oncology care.
She is actively involved in interdisciplinary collaboration across departments at CHUV, working with rheumatologists, gastroenterologists, gynecologists, and other specialists to integrate complementary approaches into patient care. Her leadership at CEMIC includes coordinating over fifty healthcare professionals and standardizing complementary therapy offerings across the hospital.
Prof. Berna Renella's research has been supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS), the FBM Pépinière fund, and the Pierre Mercier Foundation for Science. She plays a vital role in training and mentoring future clinicians and researchers in integrative medicine.
She completed her medical training at the University of Geneva, earned her MD in 2009, and completed a PhD at the University of Oxford in the Department of Psychiatry and FMRIB Functional Brain Imaging Centre. She further refined her clinical expertise through a fellowship in Interventional Analgesia at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, followed by a postdoctoral position there. Since 2015, she has led the integrative analgesia clinic at CHUV’s Analgesia Center and has been instrumental in expanding its research and clinical mission.
