Chansheng He is a Professor and Distinguished Faculty Scholar at the School of Environment, Geography, and Sustainability at Western Michigan University. He is recognized as a leading scholar in watershed hydrology and water resource management, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary and international research.
- Ph.D., Resource Development, Michigan State University, 1992
- M.S., Agricultural Zoning and Natural Resources Management, Northwestern Agricultural University, 1985
- B.S., Agronomy, Northwestern Agricultural University, 1982
Dr. He's research centers on watershed science, with a focus on integrating GIS, remote sensing, and simulation models to study how land use and human-environment interactions affect hydrological processes. He has pioneered work on soil heterogeneity impacts and developed influential models such as AVNPSM and DLBRM. His recent work promotes watershed science as a framework to address global water challenges and support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
His recent publications reflect a strong trajectory in hydrological modeling, remote sensing applications, and sustainable water management. The research spans spatial scales from agricultural watersheds to the Great Lakes basin, emphasizing data integration, model development, and international collaboration.
Dr. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including:
- Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
- Fellow, American Association of Geographers (AAG)
- Distinguished Fulbright-University of Leeds Scholar Award
- AAG Water Resources Specialty Group Distinguished Career Award
- Western Michigan University Distinguished Faculty Scholar
- National Research Council / NOAA Senior Research Associateship Award
- Outstanding Overseas Scholar, Chinese Academy of Sciences
He has secured major research grants, served on the editorial boards of journals such as Ecosystem Health and Sustainability and Geography and Sustainability, and actively mentors students. His international collaborations span China, Germany, Romania, South Africa, and the UK, demonstrating a strong commitment to global environmental research. He teaches courses in geographic inquiry, conservation, water resources management, and geographic research.
Dr. He leads a research group focused on watershed modeling and sustainability, contributing to both academic advancement and practical water management solutions.
