April James

Dr. April James is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Nipissing University and holds the Canada Research Chair in Watershed Analysis and Modeling (2010–2025). She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Laurentian University's Vale Living With Lakes Centre. Her research focuses on catchment hydrology, stable isotope hydrology, and interdisciplinary approaches to water resource management. She leads the Integrative Watershed Research Centre (IWRC), monitoring Lake Nipissing’s water quality and investigating nutrient dynamics, climate impacts, and watershed classification. Her work bridges field studies, modeling, and environmental tracer techniques, emphasizing the Canadian Shield’s unique hydrological processes.

Dr. James earned her BEng in Engineering Physics from the Royal Military College of Canada (1992), MSc in Earth Sciences from Clemson University (1994), and PhD in Geography from McGill University (2005). Her expertise includes watershed modeling (e.g., SWAT-CS), stable isotope applications, and environmental policy. Key projects include the Lake Nipissing Bays Project and the Dorset Catchments long-term monitoring initiative. She collaborates internationally on topics like ecohydrology, transdisciplinary sustainability science, and climate change impacts on water systems.

Her research output spans over 50 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing hydrological processes, modeling innovations, and water resource sustainability. She actively engages in community-based research, supporting precision agriculture and environmental stewardship in northern Ontario. Her lab employs cutting-edge tools like Bayesian modeling, high-frequency sensors, and remote sensing to address complex water challenges.
