Chamara Jewel Kwakye is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African American and African Studies at Michigan State University, part of the College of Arts & Letters. She holds a PhD in Education Policy Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Master's in Post-Secondary Administration from USC. Her research centers Black Feminism, focusing on Black girls and women’s artistic responses to White Supremacy, and she emphasizes their survival and wellness in anti-oppression work. She teaches interdisciplinary courses blending African American Studies, Gender Studies, and History.
Education:

Her research interests prioritize Black creativity as resistance, with publications in critical qualitative research and co-edited works on hip-hop feminism. She previously served as a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UIUC and faculty at the University of Kentucky and Georgia State University. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes igniting intellectual curiosity among undergraduates and fostering collective well-being.
Dr. Kwakye is actively involved in campus initiatives, including the launch of AAAS majors at MSU and courses like 'Black Feminisms: Past, Present, and Futures.' She collaborates across departments and uses performance and art to engage communities. Her work highlights interdisciplinary approaches to social justice and pedagogy.
