Chad Sonka is an Associate Teaching Professor of Music at Iowa State University, serving as Division Chair of the Applied Voice and Opera Studio within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He holds a BA in Music (Voice) from Luther College (2012) and an MM in Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music (2014).
His expertise spans voice performance, opera, and vocal pedagogy, with notable performances including Marcello in La bohème and solo roles in works by Ravel and Vaughan Williams. As an educator, he has been honored with the Shakeshaft Master Teacher title (2022-2023) and leads the Iowa Chapter of NATS, mentoring award-winning students.
Sonka is also a respected stage director, helming productions like Weill’s Street Scene and Viardot’s Cendrillon. He serves as Education and Outreach Director of the Sherrill Milnes VOICE Programs, fostering young singers’ careers. His professional affiliations include roles in opera companies such as Central City Opera and Cedar Rapids Opera.
