Celia Pearce is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art + Design at Northeastern University's College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD). An award-winning game designer, researcher, and artist, she specializes in multiplayer gaming, virtual worlds, and alternative game genres with recent focus on live action roleplaying and "playable theatre." Pearce co-founded IndieCade and established Playable Theatre, a nonprofit dedicated to interactive live performances.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Site-Specific Media Arts and Anthropology from the SMARTLab Centre at the University of the Arts London (awarded 2006) and studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Pearce's research spans game design, virtual worlds, LARP, playable theatre, diversity in games, and independent games, with emphasis on how play addresses social issues. Her immersive theater project "(F)unfair)" critiques dysfunctional capitalism through audience participation, demonstrating her interdisciplinary approach bridging art, technology, and social commentary.
