Cecily Bateman is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with Newnham College. Her research focuses on the intersection of classical reception and far-right extremism, examining how post-war far-right groups have utilized classical antiquity to construct ideological frameworks. Supervised by Prof. Ingo Gildenhard, her thesis, Classics and the Far-Right after 1945, explores the evolution of far-right ideologies through classical texts, philosophers, and concepts like 'heroic individualism.'
Her interdisciplinary work bridges Classics, History, and Politics, with a critical lens informed by Disability Theory. This research aims to address gaps in scholarship on extremist reception between mid-20th century fascism and contemporary movements, offering insights for both academic and activist efforts to counter far-right narratives.
Bateman is actively involved in public engagement through events like the 'Bridging Binaries LGBTQ+ Tour' and academic discussions on Classics' global contexts. Though no formal awards or published articles are listed, her research contributes to ongoing debates on Classics' contemporary relevance and ethical implications.
