Dr Shushma Malik is an Assistant Professor in Classics at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Classics, and an Onassis Classics Fellow at Newnham College. She holds a PhD from the University of Bristol (2013) and has previously taught at the University of Manchester, the University of Queensland (Australia), and the University of Roehampton. Her research focuses on Roman historiography, with particular emphasis on Emperor Nero and the reception of classical antiquity in modern contexts.
Education: PhD in Classics and Ancient History from the University of Bristol (2013); prior degrees from the same institution. Teaching expertise includes Roman History, Latin language, and interdisciplinary approaches to classical studies.
Research Interests: Dr Malik explores themes of decadence in Roman historiography, the construction of imperial narratives, and the reinterpretation of classical myths. Her work critically examines popular misconceptions about ancient Rome through the 'Mythbusting Ancient Rome' series, addressing topics such as Christian persecution, Olympic traditions, and architectural legends. She also investigates the Nero-Antichrist paradigm in late antiquity and its legacy in literary and religious thought.
Awards: Holder of the prestigious Onassis Classics Fellowship at Newnham College (Cambridge). Her research has been featured in public engagement initiatives and interdisciplinary collaborations, including edited volumes on global classicisms and postcolonial perspectives.
