Cecilia M. Shikuma, MD is a Professor of Medicine and holds the Edwin C. Cadman Endowed Chair at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaii at Manoa. She serves as Director of the Hawaii Center for AIDS (HICFA), a University of Hawaii Board of Regents’ Center of Excellence focused on HIV research, training, and care. Her academic career is rooted at UHM, where she earned both her BS and MD degrees, followed by an Infectious Disease fellowship at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California (LAC-USC) Medical Center.
Dr. Shikuma’s research focuses on chronic non-infectious complications of HIV, including lipodystrophy, cardiovascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, and HIV-associated dementia. She has secured extensive funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for these studies, advancing translational and clinical research to improve HIV patient outcomes. Her leadership extends to the Hawaii Center for AIDS, which integrates clinical trials, basic science research, and community care through the Clint Spencer Clinic and international collaborations in Southeast Asia.
Her contributions to HIV medicine include advancing therapies, optimizing care for HIV-associated complications, and fostering education for medical trainees and practitioners. The Center’s mission emphasizes resilience and improving quality of life for people living with HIV, aligning with her dedication to bridging research and clinical practice.
