Cavan McLaughlin is a Senior Lecturer in Media Production at the Department of Creative and Cultural Industries, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), where they contribute to both academic teaching and creative practice. Their work bridges media production with deep engagement in esoteric and spiritual cultures, particularly through the concept of 'occulture'.
Their research interests include:
- Occulture and its societal role
- Esoteric art and aesthetics
- Re-visionary myth-making as a cultural process
- Entity phenomena in contemporary contexts
- Narrativity in occult traditions
Cavan's scholarly and creative output centers on transdisciplinary explorations of mysticism, shamanism, and transformative practices. As a practicing filmmaker and media artist with over 20 years of experience, their work spans video art, music videos, and visual poetry, often informed by esoteric frameworks.
Cavan founded and chairs Trans-States, a transdisciplinary conference series and network focused on occultism and spiritual practices in modern culture, and directs Trans-States Media, its media production arm. They are also co-founder of the Monad project, a digital archive for transformative practices, and serve as Editor-in-Chief of Monad: Journal of Transformative Practice, a peer-reviewed open-access journal. Additionally, Cavan is Vice-Chair of the South-West Association for the Study of Esotericism (SWASE).
Cavan edited the volume Trans-States: The Art of Crossing Over (2019) and has published on Aleister Crowley, open-source occultism, and the narrative dimensions of esotericism. While no formal list of students or awards is available, their leadership in niche academic-creative communities highlights their influence in emerging fields at the intersection of media, spirituality, and cultural transformation.
