Dr Catriona Morrison is a Senior Research Associate in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA), where she has been actively engaged in research since 2007. She holds a PhD from UEA (2011), an MRes in Environmental Biology from the University of St Andrews (2006), and a BSc in Zoology from the University of Glasgow (2003). Her work focuses on population ecology and conservation biology of migratory birds, particularly Afro-Palaearctic species, using large-scale citizen science datasets.
Her research interests center on understanding demographic and environmental processes driving bird population dynamics. She investigates population synchrony, demographic variation, and acoustic changes in bird communities across Europe. Her work aims to inform conservation strategies by identifying drivers of decline and prioritizing actions for migratory species. She has developed strong collaborative ties with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
The recent articles highlight a strong trend in analyzing large-scale ecological datasets to understand synchrony in bird populations, the conservation of long-distance migrants, and the bioacoustic impacts of biodiversity loss. Her work combines statistical modeling, demographic analysis, and conservation applications, often in collaboration with leading ornithologists.
She has received research funding from major bodies such as the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Forestry Commission. Her scientific service includes editorial roles and committee memberships, notably as Associate Editor for Ibis and member of the British Ecological Society Review College.
Dr Morrison co-supervises PhD student Sarah Binnie on a project linking landscape structure to bird productivity and population change. She previously delivered teaching on statistics and modeling using R, as well as core evolutionary biology modules at UEA.
Her research is supported by extensive collaborations across Europe, particularly through projects utilizing data from PECBMS and EuroCES. She is also active in science communication, with media coverage in outlets like Nature and public engagement through video competitions and press releases on birdsong decline.
