Dr Catriona M.M. Macdonald is a Professor of Late Modern Scottish History at the University of Glasgow, specializing in socio-political and cultural history from 1832. Affiliated with the Department of History, her research focuses on Scottish historiography, cultural studies, and education history. She has held editorial roles including former editor of the Scottish Historical Review and president of the Scottish History Society.
Research Interests: Her work examines Scottish national identity, historiographical evolution, and the intersection of literature and history. Current projects include the evolution of Scottish historiography post-1832 and the history of the Carnegie Trust (1901-1925). She explores themes like nationalism, memory, and the role of historical narratives in shaping cultural identity.
Awards: She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. She has contributed to national institutions as Academic Lead for Historical Conversations and Trustee of National Museums Scotland.
Teaching & Supervision: Teaches modules on modern Scottish history, including History 1A (Scotland’s Millennium) and convenes Honours courses on migration and socio-political history. Supervises PhD projects on topics like Fair Trade in Scotland and Scottish military culture overseas. Active in developing MOOCs and online Scottish Studies courses.
Editorial Roles: Member of editorial boards for Scottish Affairs and History Scotland. Formerly led the Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies.
