Catrin Plumpton serves as a Lecturer at Bangor University's North Wales Medical School and acts as the alternate member (deputy) Health Economist for the New Medicines Group in Wales. Her work centers on health economics within the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation, where she leads economic components of major clinical studies.
Her academic foundation includes an MMath degree and MSc in Computer Systems from the University of Wales, Bangor, culminating in a 2011 PhD on fMRI data classification methods. This quantitative background underpins her methodological approach to health economics.
Dr Plumpton specializes in trial-based economic evaluation and decision analytic modelling, with significant contributions to epilepsy treatment economics (SANAD trials), diabetes care optimization, and maternal health interventions. Her research bridges computational methods with real-world clinical decision-making through rigorous cost-effectiveness frameworks.
Her publication record features over 30 articles in premier journals including The Lancet, BMJ, and Health Economics, demonstrating consistent output since 2008 with peaks in 2015-2017 and 2019. Recent work shows expanding focus on digital health interventions and orthopedic treatment evaluations.
She actively supervises postgraduate students in pharmacoeconomics and leads three major research projects: the Op or Non-STOP Study (Perthes' disease), ODD SOCKS (pediatric fractures), and the Big BOSS Study (orthopedic surgery). Her collaborative network spans clinical trials units, NHS bodies, and international research consortia.
Professional engagement includes chairing the 2024 International Society for Medication Adherence Conference and public outreach through Wales' National Eisteddfod Science Village, demonstrating commitment to knowledge translation beyond academia.
