Cathy Sherry is a Professor at Macquarie Law School and a member of the Smart Green Cities Research Centre at Macquarie University. Her expertise lies in land law, particularly strata title systems and high-density development. She holds a PhD in Strata Title Property Rights from UNSW Sydney, an LLB (Hons) from the University of Sydney, and a BA in English Literature from the University of Sydney. She has advised governments globally on multi-owned property laws, including reforms in the UK, Fiji, and the Middle East.
Her research focuses on the legal, economic, and social dimensions of collectively owned land, with notable contributions to strata title legislation and urban sustainability. She has led initiatives such as UNSW Urban Growers, fostering cross-disciplinary urban agriculture projects. Her book Strata Title Property Rights: Private Governance of Multi-Owned Properties (2017) is a seminal work in the field, cited in high courts internationally.
Professor Sherry has received multiple awards, including Academic of the Year (2017) and the ACCAL Research Award (2012). She teaches property and equity law, emphasizing innovative pedagogy. Her research has influenced law reforms, such as the Strata Schemes Management Amendment (Child Safety Devices) Act 2013.
Her current projects include law reforms for Fijian unit titles, urban agriculture sustainability, and energy networks in strata housing. She leads interdisciplinary teams addressing liveable cities and green infrastructure.
