Cathy Rushworth is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Utah State University, affiliated with the Ecology Center. She leads the Rushworth Lab focused on plant evolutionary ecology using rock cress (Boechera) as a model system.
Education:
- PhD in Biology, Duke University, 2016
- BS in Management, Communication, and Public Relations, Emerson College, 2002
Her research integrates evolutionary ecology, genetics, and speciation studies to investigate how plant reproductive diversity evolves and impacts ecological traits and gene flow. The lab employs field experiments, greenhouse studies, molecular biology, and theoretical modeling to address fundamental questions about reproductive strategy evolution in wild plant populations.
The Rushworth Lab mentors graduate students including Mia Stevens (graduated August 2023) and Kallol Mozumdar (graduated August 2022), with all members required to participate in service or outreach activities. The lab actively recruits graduate students (application deadline December 15) and supports postdoctoral fellowship applications despite lacking dedicated postdoc funding.
The lab operates within USU's Department of Biology and Ecology Center, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding plant-insect interactions and reproductive diversity in natural systems.
