Cathryn Kay is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS) at RMIT University, Australia. She is part of the Sustainability and Urban Planning (SUP) team, managing planning work placements and teaching courses such as Sustainable Futures and Climate Change Responses. With over two decades of experience at RMIT since 2002, she has coordinated courses like Gender, Development and Globalisation, and previously managed first-year foundation courses as a senior tutor.
Her research interests focus on (re)localisation, food sovereignty, complexity and collapse, and social movements such as Transition Towns and La Via Campesina (LVC), particularly the Movimento Sem Terra (MST) in Brazil. She has conducted fieldwork in Brazil, Mozambique, and Bangladesh. Cathryn has collaborated with NGOs including Friends of the Earth (FoE) and the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA), and has served on the boards of FoE Melbourne and Cultivating Community.
Her teaching interests span environmental science, urban planning, and sustainability education, reflected in her coordination of ARCH1275 (Planning Work Placements) and tutoring roles in courses like ENVI1153 and ENVI1041. Cathryn’s work bridges academic research with practical applications in sustainability and development.
