Cathryn Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Emory University. Her research focuses on social psychology, organizations, identity processes, and emotions, with a special emphasis on legitimacy processes in groups and organizations. She examines how legitimacy benefits leaders and how systemic inequalities, particularly gender and race, affect these dynamics. Johnson holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Iowa (1990), an MSW from the University of Illinois (1981), and a BA in Sociology from the same institution (1979).

Her research investigates how leaders gain legitimacy and its disproportionate challenges for women and people of color. Current projects include an NSF-funded study on workplace legitimacy dynamics and Spencer Foundation-supported work on environmental injustice among Black communities. She co-authored Social Psychology: Individuals, Interaction, and Inequality (2018) with Karen Hegtvedt.
Her recent publications explore leadership legitimacy, environmental justice, and health disparities. Collaborations with graduate students and colleagues like Karen Hegtvedt highlight her commitment to interdisciplinary research. Johnson teaches courses on social interaction, structural aspects of social relations, and qualitative research methodologies.
Johnson’s work has been supported by NSF and Spencer Foundation grants, and her research appears in top journals like American Sociological Review and American Journal of Sociology. She maintains an active lab group focused on organizational behavior and inequality.
