Dr. Catherine Stuer is a faculty member at Denison University, teaching East Asian Art History. She earned her MA from National Taiwan University and PhD from The University of Chicago, specializing in premodern to early 20th-century Chinese visual and material culture.

Her research focuses on urban landscape representation in historical maps, paintings, and printed images; early 20th-century photography of memory sites; and 19th-century pictorial life narratives. She explores critical approaches to spatial/environmental production, cultural heritage discourse, intermedia relations, and the intersections of landscape and self-representation.
Dr. Stuer's notable project at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science investigated 'guji' (ancient traces) as artifacts and categories in Chinese local gazetteers, examining their connection to imperial/local networks and material memory systems.
