Catherine McConnell is an academic at the University of Brighton, where she serves as Head of Student Academic Success and contributes to the Education Research Excellence Group. Her work focuses on educational leadership in student success, engagement, partnership, and peer learning. She is nationally recognized as Co-Chair of International Academic Peer Learning (IAPL), a network of over 400 professionals in peer learning.
Research Interests: Her scholarly focus lies in higher education learning and teaching, with emphasis on student engagement, student-staff partnership, transition, employability, retention, and curriculum-based skills development. She actively promotes the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and social pedagogy within higher education contexts.
The recent trend in her publications (2022–2024) reflects a strong commitment to peer learning frameworks, emotional dynamics in educational partnerships, and improving experiences for mature and international students. Her work bridges theory and practice, aiming to transform institutional approaches to student success.

Advising and Grants: Catherine has supervised postgraduate student dissertations and taught on the PGCert in Academic Practice. She led the HEFCE Catalyst project 'Changing Mindsets - Reducing Stereotype Threat as a Barrier to Student Success' and completed a UKCISA research grant on 'Creating Communities of Practice for International Student Transitions'.
Labs and Teams: She is the institutional lead for major educational projects and co-chairs the International Academic Peer Learning (IAPL) network, fostering collaboration across institutions in the field of peer learning.
