Catherine Atkinson-Ross is Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Manchester's Manchester Institute of Education, specializing in gender and sexuality studies. She serves as EDI Lead for the School of Environment, Education and Development.
Her research examines heteronormativity in education systems, institutional silence around non-heterosexualities, and limitations of equality initiatives. Current projects include BeeProud (LGBTQ+ youth wellbeing in Greater Manchester) and LGBTQ+ teacher experiences in China.
Methodological work focuses on participatory research ethics, power dynamics in child-focused studies, and rethinking researcher roles. Recent publications analyze relationships/sexuality education frameworks and primary school silencing mechanisms.
