Cath McMahon is a Professor and Academic Director of the Australian Hearing Hub at Macquarie University's Department of Linguistics. She leads the Macquarie University Centre for Implementation of Hearing Research (I-HeaR) and is affiliated with the Hearing CRC, Hearing Research Centre, and Global Indigenous Futures Research Centre. Her research focuses on hearing loss interventions, cochlear implants, and health equity, particularly in Indigenous populations. She has led over 30 projects addressing hearing health disparities and co-designed interventions like the HearHealth online support service. McMahon has published 163+ peer-reviewed articles and holds an h-index of 35 with 4,080 citations.
Her research interests include audiology, speech enhancement, and the sociocultural aspects of hearing impairment. She has pioneered equity-focused initiatives such as the STORM project to reduce racism in hearing health care. Key awards include the 2021 Editor’s Choice recognition for work on cochlear implant access. McMahon’s activities include presentations on global hearing health challenges and collaborative projects with institutions worldwide. She advises on national standards for newborn hearing screening and mentors teams addressing Indigenous child ear health.
Current projects include the MRFF-funded STORM initiative and the HearHealth platform. Her work bridges clinical practice, policy, and community engagement to improve hearing outcomes globally.
