Dr. Catarina Fouto is a Senior Lecturer in Portuguese Studies at King's College London's Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. She holds a Doctor of Literature from the University of Oxford (2012) and prior degrees from the University of Lisbon, including an MA in Medieval Studies. Her academic career includes roles at the University of Oxford and co-directing the Instituto Camões Centre. She joined King's in 2011, teaching modules spanning medieval to modern Portuguese studies, with a focus on language and advanced literary analysis.
Her research expertise centers on medieval and early modern periods, particularly history of literary theory, book history, censorship, and postcolonial studies. She co-edits the journal Portuguese Studies and serves on the editorial board of several publications. She is a member of the Seminario de Poética Europea del Renacimiento and Secretary of the Association of British and Irish Lusitanists.
Her notable publications include works on Portuguese Renaissance drama, translation politics, and Baroque poetics. She has been recognized with the 2000 Translation Award from the European Languages Year Competition. Fouto actively engages in public scholarship as a translator and serves on academic committees such as the Centre for Early Modern Studies.
